The line of handpumps stretched out impressively across the bar in The George & Dragon in Dent. Chris Little agonised over which Dent Brewery ale to select and eventually settled on The Golden Fleece – a light refreshing brew that was just the ticket after a hard race. He was joined by numerous other members of NFR who set about slaking the raging runner’s thirst.
Conditions were perfect for the race: high clouds, firm(ish) under foot and a cooling breeze on the tops. After the initial mile along the road, there was a long grinding climb up Whernside, most of which was runnable. A quick descent to a road crossing with a welcome drinks stations was followed by another grinding climb up to Great Coum. The run-in was fast and enjoyable: a swooping descent over the open fell then farmers’ fields.
Phil Sanderson was first NFR home in 16th place despite suffering from the after-effects of a bout of tonsillitis. Karen Robertson was second lady overall, and Louise Wilkinson fifth lady. If there had been a ladies’ team prize, it would have been between NFR and Todmorden. NFR was represented right down the field – Terry Hart, Jane Saul and David Beaumont were among those flying the flag for the club.
This was an excellent race, superbly organised with more maps and marshals that you could shake a stick at. It was a worthy edition to the club championship.
