Paul Appleby, Mike Telfer and Dave Wiseman travelled up to Glasgow this weekend to compete in the Highland Fling. The race covers the first half of the West Highland Way from Milngavie up to Tyndrum.
In its 53 miles the course winds it’s way through a fantastic diverse range of countryside. You start heading out the leafy suburb of Milngavie on smooth low land tracks then climb up Conic Hill after about thirteen miles to provide spectacular views of Loch Lomond.
For the next few hours you follow a mixture of forest track and twisty, rocky paths along the side of the Loch. Eventually with great relief you reach Bein Glas at the top of the Loch, the countryside widens out and you then start climbing upwards in the direction of Crianlarich. Although ‘relatively’ easy running/walking this last section seems to take an awful long time until you eventually drop into Tyndrum to be welcomed by the Piper at the finish line!
It’s a fantastic, well organised event with a great atmosphere. The excellent ‘drop bag’ system enables runners to confidently participate without the need of a support crew. We had a great day with glorious weather and running conditions and would recommend it to anyone!
Results were Mike Telfer 10:21 (73), Paul Appleby 10:51(108) and Dave Wiseman 11:09 (133). More information at www.highlandflingrace.org/
