Anniversary Waltz Sat 20th April 2013
After the recent drab weather, Saturday in the Lakes was a fabulous day. Sixteen NFR members including a couple of ladies turned out. Two other friends need to part with their ten pounds and join NFR!
Anyone who has previously competed in this race will know what a lovely route it follows. The first couple of miles from Stair are gently up hill, a bit too fast and therefore testing. The rest of the Newlands Horseshoe is sheer quality Lakeland running.
Carl Bell won in a time of 1h 34m and the last finisher took 3h 54m. Ex NFR member and long-time friend Steve Birkinshaw came in 6th. NFR had two under the tough 2-hour threshold, Andrew Higgins in 1:51:35 and a fantastic 12th placing, and Mark Clark in 33rd place. David Armstrong picked up the 3rd V50 prize despite recent injuries. There were other notable performances, particularly among the rapid improvers group (Phil Green and Francis Shillitoe). For once, Prof Russell let the side down by running out of memory in his camera. I’m not sure who took some group photographs at the beginning, but it would be good to include one in this report if possible please.
The next NFR championship race is the Fox & Hounds Chase on Sun 5th May, medium B (9mi / 1500') in the North York Moors.
